It's writen in the point of veiw of this guy, looking back at memories of the girl who changed his life.
Her name is Candy, she's a complete secret to him for a while, and she just gets into him. He loses himself in her eys, and ends up doing things he'd never seen himself doing. He tkes a chance on her that ends his career in music, the one thing he had always wanted. Music was always the one thing he had, and he gave it up for her, a girl he barely knew.
She's a prostitute who ran aways from home. She was addicted to heroin and that's why she did it all. Joe, the guy, helps her get clean, while risking his life. Iggy, her pimp, had already attempted to kill him, and there was no where he could hide that he wouldn't be found.
